Out of Goa's total area
about 20% of it has been declared as protected. It has therefore given total
protection to the natural fauna and flora in these areas. This has helped
conserve the unique biological diversity of Goa.
These areas are primarily located on the borders along the flourishing Western Ghats which is incidentally one of the richest reservoirs
of biodiversity in the world.
The common fauna found in these sanctuaries are Indian
Bison, sambar, cheetah, deer, sloth bears, langurs, wild boar etc. There are
also leopards, wild dogs, jackals, jungle cats, monitor lizards, crocodiles and
a large variety of snakes. Elephants and tigers also come into these
sanctuaries from across the borders. Goa also
receives a large variety of birds that come here during their migratory flights
each year. These sanctuaries are full of unbelievable cacophony that can enthrall
and keep a birdwatcher busy amidst the forests thick woods.
