Location
Baga, North Goa
Baga
Beach is a small beach located between its two more famous cousins,
Anjuna and Calangute. Infact, Baga was originally an extension of
Calangute Beach. The beach is protected by the rocky headlands. Being a
fishing beach, boats, nets and other fishing equipment are often laid
on the sand when not in use, lending an old fashioned charm to this
small beach.
Perched atop the Baga hill is the famous retreat
house "Casa de Retiros" which was established in 1953. At the northern
end of the beach, a small river merges with the magnificent Arabian
Sea. The Baga River is calm and thus safe for children and those who
love water. They can swim without the fear of the rip currents that
swirl around the mouth, where the river meets the sea.
An
interesting practice associated with Baga beach is the 'Sea Cure' which
attracts plenty of local Goans every year during the month of May. The
'Sea Cure' is said to be a sure shot remedy for body ailments like
arthritis and joint pains and it is also known to help blood
circulation.
Baga is known for its night life and is home to
famous nightclubs like Tito's, Mambo's and Cavala. There are also
plenty of pubs, restaurants, discos and coffee shops that are open well
into the night. During the tourist season from October to May, the road
leading to Baga beach is dotted with small stalls and shops that sell
handicrafts, trinkets, clothes, books and other items that one would
need when visiting Goa.
