Location
Anjuna, North Goa
Anjuna
beach is a small beach that lies in a cove that is barely visible from
the main road. There is only a small path that takes you directly onto
the beach. The beach is fringed with coconut palms that lean towards
the sea and rocks that dot the area.
In the 1960s Anjuna was
discovered by a group of people better known as the "hippies". They
found Anjuna to be a haven where they could dance, sing, relax,
sunbath; generally do whatever they wanted. They then began to meet
here regularly each season. It also became famous for its full moon
parties that took place on a full moon night. This trend has evolved
and Anjuna is now known for its Trance Parties that take place deep
into the night under a cloud of secrecy.
Anjuna is also home
to the weekly flea market that takes place every Wednesday from sunup
to sundown. It first started with a few hippies and back packers
selling off their old or used stuff before going back home. Now it
spreads over a large area with foreigners and Indians selling
everything from jewelry to clothes and spices to cigarettes. A key
talent needed for buying things at this place is bargaining skills.
Prices are often exorbitant and a little bargaining could cut the
prices by as much as 50 per cent or more.
Being a world famous
tourist spot, Anjuna draws people for all corners of the globe. From
aging hippies trying to live out their glory days, backpackers from
Europe to Indian tourists alike, Anjuna has something for everyone.
Swimming
This beach is generally unsafe for swimming because of an unpredictable undertow, except at its southern end.
